The new Student Dining Commons at Mount Holyoke College – a state-of-the-art, 1,000-seat dining center created by Boston design firm Bergmeyer – is intended to provide a personal and inviting experience that evokes part of the long tradition school intimate. dining rooms. It features thermoformed ceiling panels from Ceilume - which meet the strict standards of catering areas and provide visual elegance to enhance the design - combined with conventional mineral fiber flat panels which are used on the seating areas around the periphery . The transition between these two types of ceilings is an interwoven effect that helps lead diners from the food service to the seats, while helping to divide the large volume of the space into more intimate areas. “We wanted it to be a place where students felt comfortable,” recalls Krista Easterly, interior designer at Bergmeyer. Ceilume thermoformed ceiling panels, made from lightweight rigid vinyl and available in a wide variety of three-dimensional patterns, provided a solution to meet food court codes and were more affordable than plaster, wood or mineral fiber coffering. . Bergmeyer's original design called for two thermoformed panel designs: Madison, with coffering approximately 2 ½ inches deep, and Cambridge, a similar coffered look created by a ½ inch deep molding. It was a good option to get that look, something that had depth.The different types of ceiling panels are blended through a "graduated" transition. "We tried to make it look organic." They focused Ceilume panels on the food areas, salad bar and deli. "This ceiling needs to be cleanable," says Easterly, "so it was good that it was a washable panel." The thermoformed panels extend over the first adjacent seating areas and then disperse outwards, giving way to the flat panels. Ceilume panels, which naturally attenuate noise by taking advantage of the viscous mass of air in the cavity above the ceiling, were installed with Soniguard™ acoustic blankets on the top surface for additional control.

Home to the campus store, student art gallery, campus information office, mail room, ticket office and student organization office, Blanchard offers food and drink at Uncommon Cafe Bar Grounds and in a fully equipped cafe. Dances, intimate concerts, lectures and performances take place in the main cafe area, and larger events take place in the adjoining 5,000 square foot Great Hall, which offers a two-story glass wall with a view on the lower lake. Stunning New Science Facilities The College's new $34.5 million unified science complex features Kendade Hall, a 40,000 square foot multi-story 'green' building certified to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards . The Science Center houses the Departments of Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environment, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics, as well as the College's programs in Biochemistry and Neuroscience and behaviour.
